VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Students and teachers were on high alert Monday after a rash of car break-ins at Vancouver schools. In the last few weeks, school leaders said car prowlers have broken into at least eight cars in various school parking lots.At Hudson's Bay High School, school officials said thieves in groups of two or three have been caught on camera smashing their way into the cars, taking what they want and running off.Teachers and staff were warned about the break-ins."Some e-mails went out to teachers and coaches," said Hudson's Bay High School coach Mark Hasart. "(They said) just to keep valuables out of sight and to park under lighted areas."District security officials said the wave of car prowlers hit the week before school began when staff had returned. At least 8 cars were broken into and one truck was stolen.Jesus Ramos, who plans to get his driver's license next month, said he'll park in the lot at Fort Vancouver High School. But aside from common sense, he doesn't think there's much he can do to avoid a break-in."If it happens, hey, (I) just want to make sure not to leave any valuables in my car," Ramos said.Officials said it's the most amount of car break-ins they have seen in such a short amount of time. They believe the break-ins are related to a recent rash of car prowls all over the city at health clubs and other busy parking lots.Employees said they're relieved it's being addressed."It keeps you a little more aware of what you're doing, where you park and what you put in your car," Hasart said.
