Washington County deputies said thieves broke out the windows of as many as 10 cars overnight and stole mostly electronics.

Witnesses told police they spotted two men with a bat walking through the Sunset Summit Apartment Complex Tuesday morning, leaving behind a trail of theft and vandalism.

Kimberly Lawrence described how thieves reached through her broken car window Tuesday morning to steal a digital camera.

She called the vandalism and theft frustrating, but the loss of what was on her camera is even more disappointing.

"My son's birthday pictures were on there. It was his seventh birthday and that's frustrating to me," Lawrence said.

Washington County deputies said Lawrence's SUV is one of about 10 cars which were hit in the latest round of break-ins in the West Hills.

Deputies said the crooks smashed out windows and snatched iPods, stereos, GPS units and various other electronics.

Lawrence said the theft will cost her hundreds.

"Just like everybody else we work hard, we pay good money to live somewhere that is safe for our kids and you come out to this," Lawrence said.

The thieves smashed out Mike Williams' Honda window but didn't steal anything.

"You kind of wonder if your car's safe or if you need to find someplace else to park it," Williams said.

Victims said this is the second time in as many weeks that crooks have broken into cars in the area, but they said Tuesday morning's round of smash and grabs was much worse.

They hope that by the getting the word out the crimes may stop.

"Having people know that people are watching, people are angry, people want it to stop may be enough to deter them," Lawrence said.

Workers at the Sunset Summit said they plan on installing a better security system in the near future that will include cameras.
