Yo-Sam Choi Dies

POSTED: 2:36 pm PST January 2, 2008

(Sports Network) - Former WBC light-flyweight champion Yo-Sam Choi passed away Wednesday after being removed from a ventilator.

Choi had been in a coma since winning his WBO Intercontinental flyweight bout on December 25th against Henri Amol. Choi was knocked down with five seconds remaining in the twelfth round and barely beat the 10-count to win the fight.

Choi then collapsed in the ring following the decision victory and was rushed to Soonchunhyang University Hospital where he underwent an emergency two-hour brain operation.

The fighter was declared brain dead Tuesday by the Seoul Asan Hospital after two examinations by a neurosurgeon-led nine-member panel.

According to the Korea Times, Choi's heart, kidneys, liver and corneas were transplanted to patients on the Korean Network for Organ Sharing patient list.

Choi won the WBC light-flyweight title from Saman Sorjaturong in October of 1999 and defended it four times before losing it to Jorge Arce in July of 2002.
