San Diego, CA -- (Sports Network) - Tyrone Shelley scored 21 points to lead the sixth-seeded Pepperdine Waves to a thrilling, 50-48 overtime victory over the seventh-seeded Portland Pilots in the first round of the West Coast Conference tournament at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Malcolm Thomas tallied just five points, but grabbed 10 boards and recorded five blocks for Pepperdine (11-20), which will now face the third-seeded San Diego Toreros this Saturday evening in quarterfinal action. Sherrard Watson posted 17 points for Portland (9-22), while Nik Raivio chipped in 12 points in the losing effort. The Waves held Portland to a woeful 31.6 percent shooting effort from the floor in the first half and went into the break with a 27-15 lead. The Pilots stormed back in the second stanza, shooting a sizzling 61.9 percent from the field, sending the game into overtime tied at 46 apiece. In the extra session, both teams made just one field goal attempt apiece, but the Waves added two free throws which proved to be the difference in the game. The Waves scored 20 points off 20 Portland turnovers, while the Pilots tallied just five points off eight Pepperdine miscues.
