Portland, OR -- (Sports Network) - Robin Smeulders scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds as the University of Portland Pilots slipped by Santa Clara, 64-58, in West Coast Conference action at the Chiles Center. Also scoring in double figures for the Pilots (9-20, 3-10 WCC) as they snapped a four-game slide was Jared Stohl with 11 points, while Luke Sikma contributed nine points, 10 rebounds and five assists in 20 minutes off the bench. The Broncos (14-14, 6-7), losers of two of the last three, were paced by Mitch Henke with his game-high 21 points, while Ben Dowdell contributed 15 points in the losing effort. Santa Clara shot just 34.8 percent from the field in the first half, but was really hurt by just 12-of-21 at the free-throw line, yet trailed by just three points at the break, 33-30. In the second half the Broncos again struggled from the floor with a mere six field goals, making it a little easier for the Pilots to take the six-point home win. Portland outscored the visitors in the paint, 26-18, and also picked up 26 points off the bench, compared to a mere nine by the SCU reserves.
