NCAA Game Summary - Portland Vs. Saint Mary's-CA

POSTED: 11:45 pm PDT March 8, 2009

(Sports Network) - Patrick Mills scored 12 points in his return to the lineup after missing five weeks due to a broken hand, helping Saint Mary's to a 71-61 win over Portland in the semifinals of the West Coast Conference Tournament.

Mills shot just 3-of-12 from the field, including 2-of-9 from three-point range, but the Gaels (25-5) had a balanced offensive attack and will face 14th-ranked Gonzaga in Monday's championship game.

Diamon Simpson scored 15 and pulled down 14 rebounds for Saint Mary's, whose lone title at this tournament came in 1997. Omar Samhan tallied 12 points and 13 rebounds in the win. Wayne Hunter scored 13 and Carlin Hughes notched 12 points for the Gaels, who shot 53.8 percent from the field in the second half.

Nik Raivio had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Pilots (19-12), who also received 12 points from T.J. Campbell.

The game was tied at 24 at the half, and Raivio's three-pointer lifted Portland to a 42-40 edge with 11:24 remaining. Hunter's three-ball then capped seven straight points for the Gaels, who didn't trail the rest of the way.

Luke Sikma's layup brought the Pilots within 54-51 with 5:09 left, but the Gaels pulled away for good by scoring the next eight. Hughes had the final five points of the spurt.
