Thomas' Late Dunk Lifts Portland St. To Big Sky Title

POSTED: 10:59 pm PDT March 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - Jeremiah Dominguez scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, and the Portland State Vikings barely secured their second straight Big Sky title with a 79-77 win over the Bobcats from Montana State.

Julius Thomas contributed 17 points for the second-seeded Vikings (23-9), who have won their last six games to secure the conference championship. Kyle Coston had 12 points, while Andre Murray scored 10 in the victory.

Divaldo Mbunga led Montana State (14-17) with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Branden Johnson contributed 17 in the loss. Erik Rush scored 16, Marquis Navarre 12 and Will Bynum 10 in a losing effort.

With the game tied at 50 about 4 1/2 minutes into the second half, Portland State embarked on an 11-1 run to take a 10-point lead. Dominguez capped the burst on a layup with 12 1/2 minutes to go.

The Bobcats gradually got back into the game, and Mbunga's layup made it a 74-70 game with just over four minutes to play. Montana State pulled within two with 1:47 left on a Mbunga jumper.

Thomas' free throw put the Vikings back ahead by three with 1:25 to go, but Johnson's three pointer with 11.0 seconds left tied the game at 77.

Portland State elected not to call a timeout, and the strategy paid off. Dominic Waters fed a wide-open Thomas down low, and he easily dunked the ball for a two-point lead with 3.5 seconds on the clock.

Bobby Howard failed to get a shot off in the final seconds, and Portland State held on for the victory.

A back-and-forth first half ended with the Vikings holding a 40-39 edge.
