Hubel's Record-Setting Effort Earns Player Of The Week Honors

POSTED: 1:22 pm PDT October 6, 2008

(Sports Network) - Portland State quarterback Drew Hubel, Yale linebacker Bobby Abare and William & Mary returnman Jonathan Grimes have been named The Sports Network's FCS national players of the week.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Drew Hubel, Portland State, 6-5, 205, Sophomore, Quarterback, Corvalis, OR.

Hubel sparked Portland State to a 47-36 victory over then-11th-ranked Eastern Washington with a record-setting passing performance. Hubel hit 44-of-73 passes for 623 yards and five touchdowns and failed to throw an interception for the first time in four starts. The 623 yards was one yard off the Big Sky record set by Jamie Martin against Idaho State in 1991.

Hubels 73 attempts tied a single-game record set by Montanas Payton Award- winning quarterback Dave Dickenson against Idaho in 1995 and the 44 completions tied the Portland State mark established by Neil Lomax against Northern Colorado in 1979. Hubel also beat John Charles school record for passing yardage of 592, set in 1991 against Cal Poly.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Bobby Abare, Yale, 6-2, 210, Senior, Linebacker, Acton, MA.

Abare intercepted two passes and returned one for a touchdown to lead Yale to a 31-28 victory over Holy Cross. Abare's first interception in the end zone ended a Crusader drive and he returned the ball 18 yards. Abare second pick- off in the second quarter was returned for a 32-yard touchdown that put the Bulldogs ahead 14-0.

The Buck Buchanan Award candidate also contributed 10 tackles, nine of them solo stops as Yale held on for the win. Abare has eight career interceptions and has returned three of them for touchdowns.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jonathan Grimes, William & Mary, 5-10, 206, Freshman, Kick Returner/Running Back, Palmyra, N.J.

Grimes helped get William & Mary back into its game with Villanova with a 97- yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 37 seconds left in the first half. The Tribe trailed 35-0 at the times of the Grimes return, but used the momentum from his return to put pressure on the Wildcats in the second half before losing 38-28. Grimes accounted for 324 all-purpose yards. He had 161 yards on four kickoff returns and added a team-high six receptions for 105 yards and 11 rushing attempts for 58 yards. The 97-yard kickoff return and 105 receiving yards were school freshmen records.
