A Pearl District neighborhood will reduce energy use while continuing its annual tradition this holiday season.

The Hoyt Yards neighborhood in the Pearl district outfitted its trees with new LED lights. More than 200,000 lights will be used as part of the project to illuminate the Pearl District trees with eco-friendly holiday lights.

The switch from conventional holiday lights to the new LED lights will result in a 90 percent reduction in energy used.

While the lights may be more eco-friendly, they're more expensive. However, the LEDs will save the neighborhood in energy and replacement costs in the long run.

"I think it's a great idea," said Eric Griswold, an area resident who approves of the new lights. "Its fabulous and they look good too. I haven't gotten any of the new lights yet but I would definitely put these up."

In all, 302 trees will be decorated in the neighborhood.

The LED lights are guaranteed to last for three years. They were turned on Nov. 1 and will stay lit through Feb. 1.
