VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Neighbors in Hockinson worry a long-term plan from the Bonneville Power Administration to increase its power system could come at the cost of their homes.Dawn Woolcott said Wednesday that her pristine neighborhood could receive a shock in the form of high voltage power lines running through her backyard.According to the Bonneville Power Administration, their I-5 Corridor Reinforcement Project would help alleviate current power concerns and help supply energy for future growth. While it's still early in the planning process, Hockinson neighbors cite a map from the BPA as an example of how neighbors could be affected."Route 31 is the one that runs through our neighborhood," Woolcott said. "People would not want this to happen in their neighborhood, and I know I don't want it in mine."Neighbors in Hockinson formed a meeting to discuss options and they're not alone -- the Hockinson School District shares concerns as well. The school district owns 35 acres directly under the proposed line."It's a nice piece of property," said Michael Grubbs, the superintendent of Hockinson School District. "With a transmission line going over that property it does not become a good piece for us, meaning you would not want to put a school, I would think, under a high transmission line."Representatives with the Bonneville Power Administration said it's too early in the process to discuss the need to condemn any homes. They said many studies remain and it will be years before they decide to build the line at all; however, they're still trying to work with anyone who could potentially be affected."We're committed to eliminating as much of the uncertainty involved in the project as possible so people do know whether they're in a place where we consider building a line," said Doug Johnson, a BPA spokesman. Two public hearings remain for neighbors to voice their concerns. One will be held Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Gresham Holiday Inn at 2752 NE Hogan Drive. The other will be held Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hazel Dell Grange at 7509 NE Hazel Dell Avenue. For more information, visit bpa.gov.
