PORTLAND, Ore. -- A school newspaper article detailing sexual activity on campus at Westview High School drew the ire of at least one parent and the support of some students Friday. The Westview Prowl newspaper article, headlined "Inappropriate sexual contact at school surprises population," quotes students bragging about not getting caught having sex. It claims that dugouts, bathrooms and spaces beneath bleachers are "far from strangers to sexual activity."The article also quotes a student who said, "There are limited opportunities to do it at home if you're not open with your parents about your sex life."Mistee Wilson said her freshman daughter reluctantly showed her the article after bringing it home from school. She said the story went too far and aimed for shock value instead of news value."(It's) not quite a Playboy, but I think it's pretty up there," Wilson said. While Wilson condemned the article, students at the school said they need to hear about the subject from their peers."It's high school, you've got to learn sooner or later, I guess," said Jeff White, a Westview student."I don't really have a problem with it being in the school paper because it's just like free speech," said Ashlyn Hiserote, another Westview student. "They can say whatever they feel like is important to talk about."Grady Garrett, who is on the school newspaper staff, but did not write the article, said that, "as journalists, I'm pretty sure we have the right to write about whatever we want."Wilson, however, said journalists should think about the intended reader before printing their story."I think the article itself was not tasteful," Wilson said. "They could've gotten their message across without being crude and lewd ... we're trying to keep our kids from running into this and they're bringing it home from school?"School administrators have yet to publicly take a stance on the article. Westview High School's principal did not return phone calls seeking comment.
