SALEM, Ore. -- Gov. Ted Kulongoski released a letter that said projected budget cuts to education in Oregon could be as much as $1 billion through 2011.The public is being given a chance to weigh in on the potential cuts as schools prepare for the worst case scenario. The state's official revenue forecast won't be released for 2 ½ more weeks but the governor released some projected numbers that estimate a $1 billion gap through 2011.Districts are preparing several different versions of their budgets and are also holding a series of public meetings to get input on which cuts their schools could -- and could not -- live with. Some of the proposed cuts include music programs in districts like Banks and Beaverton. The Oregon City School District recently decided to close Park Place Elementary School to save $600,000 a year.Several school districts had meetings scheduled for Monday:The Banks School District was scheduled to hold a meeting at 7 p.m. at Banks Elementary School. Music Advocates for the Beaverton School District planned to meet at 7 p.m. at Southridge High School. The Oregon City School District was having a budget committee meeting at 6 p.m., where members will consider cuts to the upcoming school year. The Parkrose District had planned an executive session before its standard board meeting at Sacramento Elementary School at 7 p.m. The state's revenue forecast will be released May 15 so that's when Oregon's districts will know exactly how much money they're expected to cut.
