Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman, who was seriously injured in a car crash Sunday night, is going through a divorce, "Access Hollywood" has reported.

Freeman's attorney and business partner, Bill Luckett, confirmed for "Access Hollywood" that the actor and his wife of 24 years, Myrna Colley-Lee, "are involved in a divorce action."

Luckett noted that, "for legal and practical purposes, (Freeman and Colley-Lee) have been separated since December of 2007."

Mississippi state troopers said that the car Freeman was driving careened off the Mississippi Delta highway at approximately 11:30 p.m. Sunday. They said the car flipped end-over-end before landing upright in a ditch.

Rescuers used a jaws-of-life machine to free Freeman and his female passenger, identified as Demaris Meyer, 48, of Memphis, Tenn. -- the owner of the 1997 Nissan Maxima that Freeman was driving.

Freeman and Meyer were airlifted about 90 miles to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn., where he was treated for a broken arm, broken elbow and shoulder damage.

A retired police officer who was the first person to arrive at the scene, said a dazed Freeman told him that he and Meyer were headed to his home in Charleston, a small town some 90 miles south of Memphis.

"He said that she had offered him a ride home; that they were friends and she had offered him a ride home and she didn't really know the way and so he was going to drive the vehicle," Bill Rogers said Tuesday, recalling a conversation he had with Freeman.

Freeman's publicist said that the actor was doing well after surgery to reconnect nerves and repair damage to his left arm and hand. The publicist, Donna Lee, said that the surgery took "approximately four and a half hours including recovery."

Lee described Freeman as "in good spirits" and said he was seeing family members this morning. She added that he's walking and "looking forward to his release."
