Professor Wrestling: 'WrestleMania' Ponderings
PPV Thoughts And Theories
POSTED: 6:47 pm PDT April 6,
2006
Listen up!Class is in session. This week, a quick look back at the biggest show of the year, "WrestleMania 22," seen around the world last Sunday night. Didn't catch the prediction/results column? Get to it by clicking right here.Right now, we'll go match-by-by match, as I deliver what I know you want the most -- extra comments from your professor. Here we go:Hardcore Match: Edge vs. Mick Foley
A lot of you wrote in and felt Foley should have won this, but I disagree. He's only in the ring a few times a year, and his job is to elevate his full-timer opponent. In this case, it was Edge, who should/will be in the WWE title mix. The only thing I wanted from this match was a few more stunts and a bit more drama. Otherwise, it was really good.Casket Match: Undertaker vs. Mark Henry
It's now time for Mark Henry to go away. He can't wrestle, he never could, and he never will. Sure, UT is 14-0 in the big show, but so what?Challenge Match: Vincent K. McMahon vs. Shawn Michaels
Quite simply the best match of the night. Michaels once again steals the show, and VKM was great. Say what you want, but if I look that good when I'm 60, I'll thank my lucky stars. Like the Foley match, I wish this would have lasted longer.Money In The Bank Ladder Match: Shelton Benjamin vs. Ric Flair vs. Rob Van Dam vs. Finley vs. Matt Hardy vs. Bobby Lashley
Boo! Hiss! Flair should have won. WWE gives him no respect, and I'm getting sick of it. (I know, behind the scenes Flair is probably happier than heck just to be in the ring, but work with me here.) Now I know WWE has a ECW pay-per-view it has to sell, and winner RVD will cash in his title shot there, but I'm still disappointed. Flair is the man, everyone else pales in comparison.U.S. Title Match: Chris Benoit vs. John Bradshaw Layfield
JBL, a great heel, cheats to win. I hope he goes on a long run as U.S. champ, being a complete blowhard all along the way. If you're not going to have JBL as the top dog, at least put him in a position where he's constantly on the microphone. He's one of the best yakkers ever.WWE Tag Team Championship Match: Chris Masters and Carlito vs. Big Show and Kane
I had a huge beef with this one. The match was too short, and Masters and Carlito lost. Yeah, they eventually broke up and set up a feud between themselves, but couldn't that storyline have waited for a bit? I say this because the next night, Spirit Squad took the belts from Kane and Show on "Raw." If the writers are going to make a switch anyway, why not let the paying customers see it?World Heavyweight Championship Match: Kurt Angle vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Randy Orton
A great match, with the right finish. I just wish it had lasted longer. WWE Championship Match: Triple H vs. John Cena
The crowd was really into this match, booing Cena throughout. I loved it. With Edge now in the mix, you really can't turn Cena heel, which is too bad. I'm hoping the title match at "Backlash" later this month will be a triple-threat affair between Triple H, Cena and Edge. In that one, I'd have Edge win. He's really done a great job lately.Handicap Match: Booker T and Sharmell vs. Boogeyman
I really felt ripped off by this match, and it made me mad. If Booker was still hurting, and Boogey can't really wrestle to begin with, then why not go overboard with the fake gore? On free TV, WWE dumped a ton of worms on JBL a few weeks back. Why not go over-the-top on the biggest show of the year that fans PAY for?WWE Women's Title Match: Trish Stratus vs. Mickie James
Eh.Playboy Pillow Fight: Candice Michelle vs. Torrie Wilson
Probably the worst thing I've seen on WWE in a long time. Sure, the dames were shapely -- but a complete waste of time. If you want that stuff, get Cinemax. Besides, NOT ONE PILLOW WAS THROWN!Next week: Your letters! Now scram, because class is … dismissed!(Professor Wrestling is a masked employee of Internet Broadcasting.
