Girl's Feel Good Bag Recovered, Arrests Made

HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. -- Two people were arrested Wednesday on charges they stole a backpack belonging to a girl who was suffering from cancer.During a car break-in in Happy Valley last week, thieves stole a pile of mail, a wicker-style basket, an airline security gate pass, an Easter dress and a “feel-good” collection of personal items that belonged to a girl diagnosed with cancer.Deputies said the feel-good bag provided the girl comfort when she would undergo medical treatment for her cancer. It contained an autographed Portland Timbers soccer ball, an autographed Timbers T-shirt and a Timbers team photoAccording to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, suspects in the theft were caught on camera when they tried to exchange the Easter dress for cash at a store on Southeast 82nd Avenue.
When surveillance video of the transaction aired on TV, Portland Police Bureau detectives recognized the suspects.Police said they found Phillip Merriam hiding in a refrigerator at a southeast Portland home. He resisted arrest and a Taser had to be used in order to take Merriam into custody, deputies said.Lisa Mathers was also arrested on theft and identity charges in connection with the case.Deputies said they think Mathers and Merriam are responsible for at least 10 more car break-ins in the Happy Valley area.As for the feel-good bag, it was recovered and returned to the girl.
