GLADSTONE, Ore. -- Two men were hospitalized after a bat beating that may have been a case of mistaken identity, police said Sunday.Neighbors said there was a small gathering for a barbecue at a Gladstone apartment Saturday night.Hours after it ended, two men wearing gray hooded sweatshirts kicked in the apartment door. They approached a man who was sleeping on the couch and beat him over the head with a baseball bat. They then went to the bedroom and started to beat another man.But investigators said the attackers went after the wrong people. The victim told police he heard his attacker say they had the "wrong guy" and they quickly ran away.Police said the beating happened because one of the attackers believed the victim had tried to rape his girlfriend earlier that night. An ambulance took both of the victims to hospitals. Police said one of them was badly beaten and they weren't able to interview him about the incident."I've been here 14 years and nothing like that has ever happened," said Paul Montgomery, who lives at the apartments.Neighbors said they're on edge as a result of the attack."That's a little scary to have it happen right across from the apartment from me," said neighbor Jeanette Still. "It's tragic. I hope they're going to be OK."Anyone with information on the attack is asked to call Gladstone police.
