Thieves Hit Cars At Albany Train Station Multiple Times

Police are searching for the thieves responsible for a rash of car break-ins last weekend.

Police said the crime is on the rise, and the most recent targets were cars parked at the Albany train station, where someone broke into six cars last weekend.

Police said car break-ins at the station are becoming a real problem and have increased in the past three months.

"It is a concern. People are trying to save money by using the bus and save gas and ride the bus and people parking here during the weekends riding to Portland or wherever going out of town," said Keith Hashagen, whose wife uses the lot.

Now people returning on the Amtrak train hope to come back to find their car still intact.

"Luckily, I have a real beat up car, and I don't keep anything in it," said Todd Reeve, who uses the Albany lot.

A man who came here to watch the trains come and go discovered the windows broken on the cars Sunday night and called 911, police said.

Two cars were broken into Memorial Day weekend as well.

The lot is used by train passengers as well as bus travelers.

"I think it's probably very likely with a lot of cars parked here especially over night. It's probably an ideal place for someone to break into a car," Reeve said.

The Amtrak clerk inside the station said there hadn't been any crime like this in the several years since the renovations of the building and the parking lot.

People who use the lot said it would be a shame to see the area suffer a downward slide again, and hope neighbors and police will be more on the lookout.

"We've got nice lighting. We've got a nice building. We've got a nice parking lot. There's roads to the west of us and we're still having problems. I think we need more support from the police to patrol this area a little better," Hashagen said.

The Amtrak clerk said that Albany police promised more patrols during the overnight and weekend hours.
