ALBANY, Ore. -- Neighbors in Albany found car windows smashed and their stereos, GPS units and CDs stolen Monday morning. There were as many as six car break-ins in Albany on Sunday night.Mike Cornelius woke up to find his Toyota Camry vandalized and his GPS, checkbook and sunglasses stolen. He said it will cost him more than $600 to replace the missing items."It's expensive and I won't be able to replace it for quite a while now," said Cornelius, whose neighbor also had items stolen.
The thieves punched holes in windows and stole everything they could. In the past three months, car break-ins have increased dramatically, police said.A report in the Albany Democrat-Herald newspaper said there were 45 car break-ins reported in April and then 83 break-ins reported in May.Cornelius said the car prowls can be tough on hard-working people."I think there's a lot of drugs around and these people are finding money wherever they can," he said. "(It) just so happens it was my car last night."Police said the best defense against the break-ins is not to leave anything of value in your car.
