VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Two people broke into a sandwich shop Thursday, gaining entry through an air conditioning duct in the ceiling.Carol Jones, who works at The City Sandwich Shop in downtown Vancouver, said she opened the doors Thursday to find the restaurant ransacked and the cash register empty."Basically, it looked like they took those 20-gallon garbage bags full of stuff and just threw it all over the place," Jones said. It's the first burglary in the restaurant's nine-year history.
Jennifer Brassfield, the restaurant manager, said the thieves removed a huge piece of the air conditioner, cut electricity to the building and then dropped about 10 feet through a hole into the store."I don't understand, I really don't," Brassfield said. "It's a sandwich shop of all places -- a sandwich shop!"About $400 was stolen, including the restaurant's first $20 bill, which was framed and hanging on a wall in the shop.On Thursday, a big cleanup was in order before the sandwich shop opened 3 ½ hours late.Police said they believe two people were involved in the break-in and a clock thrown on the ground in the restaurant showed the time as 4:30.Anyone with information on the burglary is asked to call Vancouver police.
