Taggers Vandalize Salem Neighborhood

Vandals spray painted graffiti all over a south Salem neighborhood and now police are trying to find the culprits.

Neighbors woke up to a rash of tagging early Sunday morning around Maplewood Drive and Rock Creek Drive South.

The vandalism included some gang symbols, but police said they don't necessarily think it's a sign of violence to come.

They said they think it was someone trying to be shocking and offensive and trying to cause a lot of damage.

In the south Salem neighborhood Tuesday, there was still bright red spray paint on signs, a few cars and trucks and traces of it on garage doors.

Some of the tagging included curse words, dollar signs and sexual images, but a lot of it was roman numerals.

Police said those are symbols for local gangs, but this kind of tagging has rarely, if ever, happened in the south Salem neighborhood.

Locals said they don't think anyone is trying to claim this as their turf, they just think it's the work of reckless criminals and it is disappointing.

"Certain areas of Salem, like east Salem, I've seen it a fair amount. It just makes you sick when you see it," neighbor Gary Haney said.

Salem police received a total of 14 reports of vandalism, but most of it had been cleaned up by Monday morning.
