Police Seek Castle Rock Mailbox Bashers

Police are searching for the vandals who are behind a wave of mailbox breakings Sunday.

Early Sunday morning, police started taking dozens of reports of bashed and broken mailboxes along Davis Road and South Silver Lake Road in Castle Rock.

Police said they haven't made any arrests in the string of crimes that left more than 30 people with mailboxes that were either damaged or completely destroyed.

Some Castle Rock residents said they are just angry that this type of crime has just become a part of their lives.

The damage on South Silver Lake Road went for miles with mailboxes on both sides of the street dented, damaged and some even knocked off their posts.

"When I went down there it was leaned up like the one side wasn't nailed down," Castle Rock resident Sandra Galster said.

Galster's mailbox was barely hanging on Monday afternoon and she said she's fed up.

"Last year it got hit with the same box. Two years ago it got hit with the same box and we kind of straightened it out. We went and bought a new box two years ago. But why put it up when it's just going to get damaged?" Galster said.

Police said the vandals made their run late Saturday night driving up and down Silver Lake Road and also driving along the nearby Davis Road.

Officials called it an extensive rash of vandalism and said they still don't have any suspects.

Galster said she and her neighbors have gotten used to buying a new mailbox every few months.

She said she'd get a post office box if she could but it's just not convenient to drive into town for her mail every day.

So for now Galster said she can only hope that the vandals are either caught or grow a conscience.

"It's stupid. It's just stupid prank kids stuff. It doesn't make no sense. If it doesn't belong to you, don't touch it," Galster said.

Anyone with information about the crime should call the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office.
