CAMAS, Wash. -- A rise in daytime burglaries led Camas police to warn neighbors to stay alert Monday. The Camas Police Department received five reports of burglaries in a recent burglary spree. Clark County deputies have received an additional three reports.Lani Harrington, who lives in Camas, said burglars broke in through a window a few weeks ago. The burglary occurred during the middle of the day in a neighborhood where residents insist crime is rare."It's pretty open. We often go to each other's house for barbecues," said resident Joe Wilds. "You feel a little invaded. There's a lot of trust around here."Harrington said the thieves quickly went through his family's drawers and escaped with thousands of dollars worth of family heirlooms, jewelry and rare coins.Camas police officers said it's one of many cases in a recent burglary spree."(When) I realized what it had happened, it just makes you sick," Harrington said.Police said thieves enter through unlocked windows in four of the five cases."It's not uncommon for us to leave our doors unlocked," Wilds said. "And I'll tell you, (this) changed that. The doors (are) locked and the alarms (are) on."Police said they're trying to track down the stolen property. In the meantime, Camas officers have asked neighbors to stay alert and lock doors and windows during the day. They've also asked residents to keep watch for suspicious activity, as well as unfamiliar cars and people.
