PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland police announced a $1,000 reward Tuesday for information that leads to the arrest of a man wanted on rape and prostitution charges.

Officers said 33-year-old Jammie Smith has felony warrants out for his arrest on charges of sodomy, sex abuse, rape and compelling prostitution. The warrants carry a $1.2 million bail.

Smith targeted juvenile females, according to the Portland Police Bureau, and the case involves as many as five girls, ages 13 to 16.

He is described as black, 5 feet 8 inches tall and 240 pounds. He is known by the nickname "Punch," which is tattooed on his stomach. He also has a tattoo on his back with the words "Piru Gang."

Police said Smith is known to frequent northeast Portland and deep southeast Portland.

Portland detectives said they began investigating Smith about a year ago after girls admitted they'd been prostitutes.

Investigators said they believe Smith recruited underage girls for prostitution on 82nd Avenue in east Portland and also used adult women to manipulate the teens into working for him.

People who live and work near 82nd Avenue said they've witnessed what appeared to be young girls working the street.

"I saw two young girls waiting. One car came and took the young girl. I think it's prostitution," said Dulce Gonzalez.
