NEWBERG, Ore. -- Detectives took two boys into custody who were then cited on suspicion of reckless burning in the case of a series of fires set on and near the George Fox University Campus. The boys, ages 13 and 14, allegedly started at least three fires within a few blocks of each other, requiring fire officials to work quickly to keep them from spreading to dry brush and trees, police said. One other fire was set at the Pool Park, adjacent to the local pool, near the university campus, police said. The fires had potential to cause considerable damage since they were set in dry brush and trees adjacent to university facilities, Newberg Fire officials said.
After being cited for reckless burning, the boys were released to their parents.During the investigation, detectives said they learned the two boys were also involved in several thefts, some of which occurred at the Chehalem Park and Recreation District public pool. The boys allegedly stole things from other people's lockers multiple times, police said.Anyone who had property stored in the men's locker room and believe it was stolen recently should contact Detective Eric Ronning at 503-537-1226.
