More than 100 people gathered Thursday night for a memorial remembering a man who was shot while tending a southeast Portland market.

Chester Yeom died last week from a viral infection. He had been paralyzed since 2007 when a robber shot Yeom in the neck during a botched robbery.

Yeom was only tending to the store while the owner had left on an errand.

Jeffrey Yeom, Chester's son, said his father influenced many people.

"He was a caring father," Jeffrey Yeom said. "He was generous and always willing to help others … I am just blessed to have him as my dad."

Jimmy Kashi, the man who shot Yeom during the robbery, was convicted earlier this year. He is serving a 35-year prison sentence.

After Yeom's death, the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office said it plans to seek aggravated murder charges against Kashi.
