Another Mayor In Pre-Foreclosure

Gresham Mayor Says He Found Buyer For House

A house owned by Gresham Mayor Shane Bemis is in pre-foreclosure, making him the second local mayor in as many weeks to admit to problems paying for his home, according to reports.

Bemis, who volunteers in his position as Gresham mayor, said his house near the Persimmon Country Club had to be sold as part of his divorce, according to the Gresham Outlook newspaper.

Last month, Portland Mayor Sam Adams admitted two of his properties were also in pre-foreclosure. He blamed his financial problems on escalating legal bills from the attorney general's investigation into his relationship with Beau Breedlove. The attorney general has since cleared Adams.

In a statement released Wednesday, Bemis said it's a tough time to sell a home.

"Since initially putting the house on the market, we have lowered the price four times in an effort to sell the house, even for a financial loss," Bemis said.

But Bemis, who has served as the city's mayor since 2007, said he has found a buyer and the deal is expected to close this month.
