Hot Playground Equipment Dangerous

High temperatures like those seen Thursday can quickly heat play equipment to dangerous levels.

FOX 12 used an infrared thermometer to check the temperatures on play equipment at a local playground and found that items in direct sunlight reached alarming highs.

During the hottest part of the day, one slide got up to 150 degrees and swings tested at about 128 degrees.

The playgrounds that were kept busy and filled with children were all in the shade. And some parents said they know what to look for.

They said they test playground equipment with their hand first to make sure it's cool enough to be safe for their children to play on.

FOX 12 also took the temperature of a metal slide in the shade at Beaverton Park and it read about 77 degrees, which was about half the temperature of the plastic slide in the sun.
