Multnomah County commissioners will soon vote on forcing restaurant and coffee house chains to post calories and other health facts on their menu boards.

The proposed rule would affect all restaurants and coffee shops in Multnomah County that have 15 or more stores nationwide.

It would require them to display calorie counts on menus or sign boards next to each item, including drinks.

New York, San Francisco and Seattle's King County have all approved similar rules.

Portland residents said the extra information is a good idea, even if it doesn't sway people's opinion.

"I think it would definitely provide people with a new perspective on what they're actually eating, which I think is a positive thing," said Robin Shawver, who likes the idea.

"You always need to keep people aware and keep the public in knowledge of what they're doing," said Jamie Maul. "They have the right ot he knowledge even if they choose to ignore it."

The commissioners will vote on the issue next Thursday. If it's approved, it will go into effect early next year.
