PORTLAND, Ore. -- An uninsured Portland woman suffering from a brain tumor returned from Washington, D.C, on Wednesday to continue her push for health care reform in downtown Portland.Alaya Wyndham-Price, 28, advocated for health care reform before lawmakers and then led a 5,000-person march through the nation's capital earlier this week.On Thursday, Wyndham-Price and members of Health Care For America Now demonstrated outside Terry Shrunk Plaza to encourage the passage of national health care.Wyndham-Price suffers from a benign tumor at the base of her skull that is causing health problems as it grows. She said her previous employer's health benefits were capped well below the $140,000 it would cost to remove the tumor."My insurance capped at $20,000 and then I lost my job. So, now I have absolutely no insurance. ... Now I'm uninsurable because I have a pre-existing condition," Wyndham-Price said.In Washington, House Democratic leaders worked to rally their rank-and-file members around last-minute agreements on insurance taxes and prescription drug coverage that could make the overhaul a reality.Although some issues remained unresolved -- including a divisive battle over restricting taxpayer funding of abortion -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said: "We have enough to move forward."
