Makes 2 cups - 4 servings

This is applesauce for adults. Amaretto not only imparts a luscious almond flavor but also an enticing aroma. Serve this as part of brunch or for a fall dessert.

2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and cut into ½-inch chunks
2 Bartlett pears, peeled and cut into ½-inch chunks
¼ cup water
1 tablespoon lightly packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons Amaretto (see Tip)

Combine the apples, pears, and water in a medium saucepan; cover and cook over low heat until very tender, about 20 minutes.

Use a spoon to mash the fruit to the desired consistency, chunky or smooth. Add the sugar and Amaretto; stir until the sugar is melted.

Serve at room temperature or chilled.

Advance preparation

This applesauce will keep for up to 3 days in a covered container in the refrigerator.
