PORTLAND, Ore. -- A local group proposed that a deposit for bottles and cans be doubled and that more containers be added to the list. It's a proposal that could cost you more at the grocery counter, but it also pays more back and encourages everyone to recycle.Members of Oregon's Bottle Bill Task Force said they'd like more containers added to the bottle bill list, meaning more containers would require a deposit that could be turned in for money later. They're also asking for the current bottle deposit to be raised from 5 cents to 10 cents.
The task force will present its recommendations to the state Legislature by Nov. 1.Starting Jan, 1, water bottles will be able to be recycled for a 5-cent return.
