Giles Blocks Deal To Red Sox

POSTED: 10:12 pm PDT August 8, 2008

(Sports Network) - Apparently winning isn't the only thing to Brian Giles.

The Padres outfielder has blocked a deal that would have sent him from the last-place Padres to the Red Sox, who currently are tops in the AL wild card race.

The Red Sox claimed Giles off waivers earlier this week, and had until a set time on Friday to work out a trade with San Diego. The 37-year-old outfielder has a limited no-trade clause, however, and he exercised it despite the fact that he has never won a World Series.

The Indians went to the World Series twice when Giles played there from 1995-1998, but lost twice. The Padres have made two playoff appearances with Giles on the club, but never advanced to the World Series. They enter play Friday at 44-71, in last place in the NL West. The Red Sox enter play Friday at 66-49, 2 1/2 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, and 2 1/2 games ahead of the Twins for the wild card.

Giles is hitting .294 this season with seven home runs and 38 runs batted in.
