Blue Jays Designate Stairs For Assignment

POSTED: 9:34 pm PDT August 28, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Toronto Blue Jays designated Matt Stairs for assignment following Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays and are expected to trade the designated hitter within the next two days.

The Blue Jays were mum on which club was attempting the acquire the services of the 40-year-old, saying only that a deal is in the works.

Stairs, who inked a two-year contract extension worth $3.25 million last November, batted .250 with 11 home runs and 44 RBI in 105 games this season for Toronto. He is scheduled to make $1 million in 2009.

In a related move, the club purchased the contract of outfielder Travis Snider from Triple-A Syracuse. The 14th overall pick in the 2006 first-year player draft, Snider, 20, hit .274 with 23 homers and 91 RBI in 133 games in stints with Class-A Dunedin, Double-A New Hampshire and Syracuse this season.
