San Francisco Giants (42-34) At St. Louis Cardinals (41-38), 8:15 P.m.

(Sports Network) - Right-hander Matt Cain seeks a return to the winning side of the ledger tonight when the San Francisco Giants head to St. Louis for the third of four games with the host Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

San Francisco has won the first two games of the series behind reigning Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum and veteran southpaw Randy Johnson.

Cain, who entered 2009 with 30 wins in 105 career appearances, had won nine of 10 decisions this season before dropping a 5-1 verdict at Milwaukee on June 26.

He defeated the Cardinals, 4-2, as part of his early-season run, allowing six hits and an earned run in 6 1/3 innings on May 29 in California.

He's 1-1 in three lifetime starts against them, posting a 6.48 earned run average in three starts and 16 2/3 innings.

In seven road starts this season, the 2002 first-round draft choice is 4-1 with a 2.72 ERA in 46 1/3 innings.

For St. Louis, righty Adam Wainwright tries to reverse the verdict of a May 31 start in San Francisco.

In that outing, his 11th of the season, the 6-foot-7, 228-pounder was beaten, 5-3, after allowing 10 hits and four runs in seven innings.

He's 3-2 in five starts since, including consecutive defeats of Florida, Detroit and Kansas City on June 10, 16 and 21.

The Cardinals outscored their opponents, 36-11, in those three starts.

More recently, Wainwright was beaten, 3-1, by the Minnesota Twins on June 26, a game that saw him surrender seven hits and two earned runs in seven innings.

On Tuesday, Edgar Renteria went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Johnson won the battle of former Cy Young Award winners, as the Giants pulled out a 6-3 victory.

Johnson (8-5) gave up three runs on four hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings to win for the fifth time in his last six decisions.

Bengie Molina had two hits and two RBI, and Pablo Sandoval finished 2-for-4 with a run knocked in and two runs scored for San Francisco, which has won five of seven.

Chris Carpenter (5-3), previously 3-0 at home this year, was roughed up for six runs on 11 hits in just five frames for St. Louis, which has dropped six of seven.

As has been the case for much of the season, Albert Pujols provided the Cardinals' offense with two homers and three RBI, finishing the month of June with an eye-popping 14 home runs and 35 RBI.

The Giants won two of three games from the Cardinals at AT&T Park back in May and have taken six of the past seven meetings in this series.
