PORTLAND, Ore. -- A Portland couple hopes a surveillance photo will lead to the arrest of a man using fake checks and stolen identification.Portland police investigators said the man has passed bad checks at numerous stores.Colleen Gifford, who lives in Portland, said she discovered checks against her account a month ago. She started receiving overdraft notices on checks she never wrote.Police said the checks were written to WinCo, Joe's Sporting Goods, Home Depot in Clackamas and Best Buy in Portland and Salem.
"There were three checks and each one was over $2,000," Gifford said.Gifford and her husband closed the account and opened a new one. A week ago, Gifford discovered the man had tapped into their new account, created more checks and had hit again."This last one in two days took $2,200 in checks," Gifford said. "It just can happen so quickly and you don't even know it."Best Buy provided police with surveillance photos of a man suspected in the identity theft. The Giffords hope someone can identify the man."We hope that somebody out there recognizes him because if he's doing it to us, he's doing it to many people," Gifford said. The thief is described as white, in his 40s, about 6 feet 2 inches tall and 240 pounds. He often wears a baseball cap and he is partially bald.Anyone with information about the man is asked to call 503-823-0287.
