Business Booming At Small Auto Body Shop

It's the intersection of bust and boom.

A Ford dealership on Main Street in the small Oregon town of Molalla has closed up shop. Across the street, however, business is booming at Price Auto Body, a small car repair shop owned by Terry Price.

Price said the economic crisis is helping his business. Drivers have packed their cars into his garage to be repaired, rather than replaced.

"People would rather spend a couple thousand, get it all fixed up, shined up, no dings, no dents," Price said. "Instead of going out and spending $30,000 or $40,000 (on a) replacement. I've seen a lot of it."

Residents in Molalla, a small town of about 7,000 people, said conditions are as bad as they've seen.

"I've watched this town grow and I've watched this town fall and I've watched it grow again," said Marian Price, who lives in Molalla. "Right now, with the economy, it's pretty stuck."

It may be stuck, but not at Price's shop, where workers stay until late in the evening. Price said he hates to see local stores close up shop, but he's in no danger of it happening to him.

"(It's) very busy," he said.

The former manager of a Ford dealership in Molalla said the company and landlord couldn't agree on a new lease and it closed as a business decision.

Only one major new car dealer remains in the northern Willamette Valley town.
