A St. Helens man won $12.5 million in Oregon Lottery's Megabucks.

Rod Schwirse picked up the winning ticket Saturday at the Red Apple Market on Columbia Street in St. Helens.

Schwirse couldn't be reached for comment Tuesday, but the market's workers said they were not only happy for him, but they were excited for the store.

The location where the winning Megabucks ticket is purchased receives a share of the winnings. The Red Apple Market will receive about $100,000.

"(It's) going to help us out a lot," said Scott Merriman, an employee at the market. "I know we're going slow right now, our town isn't doing good. It's going to help us out."

Schwirse chose the Investment Payment Plan to claim his prize. The plan presents the winner a one-time payment equal to one-half of the advertised jackpot. He received $6.25 million before state and federal taxes were withheld.

The $12.5 million jackpot is a big one, but it's still not one of the top 10 Megabucks jackpots ever:

  • Nov. 15, 2004: $30 million
  • July 31, 1991: $23 million
  • Nov. 24, 2003: $21.7 million
  • Oct. 23, 2002: $21 million
  • April 28, 2003: $18.2 million
  • Feb. 10, 1999: $18 million
  • Aug. 27, 2005: $17.2 million
  • April 12, 2004: $15.6 million
  • Nov. 12, 2001: $15 million
  • March 30, 1988: $14 million
