Reuse To Help Eliminate Need For Spending

A local blogger has tips to help get anyone on the path to financial freedom by eliminating debt with some simple solutions.

The advice comes from a southeast Portland blogger named J.D. Roth, who started his blog Get Rich Slowly about two and a half years ago when he was drowning in debt.

Roth managed to dig himself out of $35,000 of debt and blogged about the entire process.

It started out as an online journal, but now thousands of people check in for tips and advice every day.

All week Roth has been presenting tips for dealing with debt, but Thursday night he had advice for cutting your spending.

He said first of all, you need to stop comparing yourself to other people. There will always be someone with a nicer car or a nicer home, and that's OK.

Also, avoid places that tempt you to spend money like the mall.

Instead, take a good look around your house, Roth said.

"I already have a bunch of stuff; I mean, I bought a bunch of stuff when I was getting into debt, that's how I got into debt. So, instead of going out and buying new stuff, I decided, well, maybe I'll see what I already have, what kind of music I have, what books I have, what games I have and see if I can't make those work and almost pretend like they're new. And what I found was, a lot of the times, I hadn't even listened to the CDs that I bought or read the books that I bought," Roth said.

Roth also said a good old-fashioned garage sale is a great way to make a few hundred dollars and recycle some of that stuff.
