PORTLAND, Ore. -- With the economic crisis, people are more concerned than ever about getting out of debt and saving money. So all week FOX 12 has been featuring tips and advice from a local blogger, JD. Roth whose Web site Get Rich Slowly attracts thousands of people a day.The site offers all kinds of information on personal finance but he makes it easy to understand. He dug himself out of $35,000 in credit card debt in just about two and a half years by making simple changes in the way he lives.
He and his wife shop at consignment stores, grow a lot of their own food and make homemade bread. He said these simple cost-saving things have become hobbies. And he said spending wisely has become easier now that he's debt-free."It's like I gained control of my money. When I was in debt, I was always like, 'What's a little more? What's a little more debt gonna hurt?' and so I would spend the money. Whereas now, no. I think, 'That's my money, why do I want to go spend it on a dinner out or a new car or whatever?'" Roth said.Roth said he doesn't live like "militant frugalista" and even budgets a certain amount to spend each month on comic books, which he collects.Instead he said he is just mindful about where and how he spends his money so that he won't fall back into debt.
