PORTLAND, Ore. -- How does a $70,000 salary sound for a government job in which you use Twitter and make Facebook updates?

In the words of one Portland-area tweeter, "I would be perfect for that job!"

Multnomah County could be forced to cut more than 200 positions, but it's hiring for a social media coordinator position that pays $60,000 to $70,000.

The office chair for Public Affairs will receive a pay cut and two positions will be eliminated to pay for the new media coordinator. The county created the position because officials said Multnomah County residents don't realize what their county does for them.

In addition to tweets and Facebook updates, the candidate should also be able to blog and write news releases on tight deadlines, according to the job posting.

However, some Portlanders said they don't feel a social media job is the best use of money for the county.

"It looks like a misappropriation of payroll dollars," said Rob Phillips, who lives in the area. "And they could find someone to do it fairly cheaply."

"I don't think it's appropriate to play around on the Internet all day," said Heather Guidero, who was concerned about the job. "They have a county Web site -- I don't see why that's not enough."

The closing date for the job is May 20.
