PORTLAND, Ore. -- A solar-powered waffle cart in northeast Portland celebrated its grand opening Saturday, serving up free samples and live music at the corner of Alberta Street and 23rd Avenue.Solar Waffle Works is designed and operated by the Portland Public Schools' Community Transition Program, which helps recent high school graduates transition to life after schooling.School officials said the waffle cart will help students by making them active partners in the creation of a start-up business. The business plan, logo, marketing concepts and menu were all developed by students.Ty Adams, one of the waffle cart's partners, said he's excited about the new concept."I think it's probably the first solar-powered food car in Portland as far as I've heard and maybe one of the first in the country," Adams said.Solar Waffle Works is open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Weekday revenue supports the Community Transition Program.
