Salem police arrested a man who they said broke into a video game store early Thursday morning.

Samuel Brendlinger, 26, was arrested after he broke into Game Crazy at 4855 Commercial St. SE in Salem, police said.

Dwight Simpson, the owner of the Game Crazy store, said he was notified by his alarm company that the store alarm was activated.

When he arrived at the store just before 2 a.m., he told police he saw his store’s front window broken and someone inside.

When Brendlinger left the store, he ran and Simpson gave chase, police said. Simpson tackled him, but Brendlinger escaped from Simpson’s grasp and ran across Commercial Street where he was nearly struck by a passing motorist, officers said.

Police said an officer followed Brendlinger into a construction area, where he was found trying to scale a retaining wall. He was taken into custody.

Brendlinger faces burglary and criminal mischief charges. He was taken to the Marion County Jail.

Police said Brendlinger cut his wrist on broken glass during the burglary.
