Washington County deputies credited a Portland man with saving his neighbor’s life after he rushed to the aid of a man pinned under his truck.

John Salvatori, 73, witnessed Kerry Gerttula trapped under his truck Friday. Authorities said Gerttula, 65, forgot to place his pickup truck in park when he pulled into his driveway.

Gerttula stepped out of the truck, but it rolled back and knocked him off his feet. A front wheel then pinned Gerttula to the ground.

Salvatori, who lives in a nearby home, jumped in the driver's seat of the truck and moved it off Gerttula’s chest. Authorities said Gerttula may have died had Salvatori not moved the truck.

Gerttula was taken to Oregon Health & Science University with non-life-threatening injuries.
