Thirteen children and one adult were hospitalized after they were exposed to chemical fumes at a northeast Portland hotel pool.

Around 9 p.m. Saturday, Portland Fire and Rescue said they received a 911 call reporting that 15 people were experiencing nausea, vomiting and breathing problems after they spent time in the pool-area at the Embassy Suites Hotel on Northeast 82nd Avenue.

Fourteen of the patients were transported to five nearby hospitals. There is no further information on their conditions or their identities.

Hazardous Material crews took samples of chemicals and determined that, during routine testing and maintenance of the pool, a small amount of Muratic acid mixed with sodium hypochlorite, causing a vapor to form in the pool-area.

Haz-Mat crews remained on the scene while the pool area was ventilated and then released the area back to Embassy Suites.

There is no word if the pool has been reopened.
