The gasoline price surge continued to affect Oregon as the state's average price for a gallon of gas jumped to $3.07.

Oregon followed the trend of the national average price, which jumped by more than 7 cents to $2.87.

"A week ago, it appeared the prices were leveling," said Elliot Eki, AAA's public affairs director. "Now we're facing the potential to set new highs in average prices."

Oregon's highest recorded statewide average price was $3.11 in May 2006.

Salem is less than 2 cents away from passing its highest recorded average price set in June 2006 and Vancouver, Wash., is also close to eclipsing its gas price record.

At $3.07, Oregon's average gasoline price is tied with Nevada for the fourth highest in the nation. California has the highest average price at $3.34, followed by Washington ($3.11) and Hawaii ($3.08).

Motorists are encouraged to practice daily fuel saving measures, such as consolidating errands, avoiding fast starts and stops, observing speed limits, maintaining proper tire air pressure and regularly maintaining vehicles to be sure they operate efficiently.
