Four people were arrested Monday after they broke into two Salem churches and stole priest robes, police said.

Police said a 26-year-old man and three 16-year-olds were seen breaking into the First United Methodist Church on State Street at about 8:15 p.m.

They then walked over to St. Joseph's Catholic Church and broke into the building there as well, authorities said.

The alleged burglars stole three priest robes, a 3-liter bottle of sacramental wine and a ceremonial candle from St. Joseph's Church. They also stole a ceramic set of praying hands from First United Methodist Church.

Police said the four burglars were arrested at Capitol Mall Park while they were trying on the robes.

Wayne Smith, 26, a transient, was charged with two counts of burglary in the second degree. He was booked into the Marion County Jail and the teenagers were taken to the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center.
