Officials Investigate Possible Meningitis Death

UPDATED: 1:14 pm PDT June 11, 2007

Klickitat County health officials are investigating a possible meningitis death in Dallesport, Wash.

Authorities said meningococcal disease is suspected in the death of a Dallesport Elementary School sixth-grader. The specific cause of death is pending, but the patient's clinical course suggested meningococcal disease was responsible.

The student died Sunday night, according to a statement on the Lyle School District's Web site.

Health officials said that people who have been in close contact with the child in the past 10 days could be at risk. Examples of close contact include being sports teammates, kissing, sharing eating utensils or pop cans, and direct coughing or sneezing in a person's face, according to health officials.

The health department will be screening and treating people at Dallesport Elementary School on Tuesday.

KPTV.com will update the story as more information becomes available.
