Children's Jewelry Recalled Due To Lead Poisoning Hazard

POSTED: 4:24 pm PDT July 5, 2007

The Consumer Products Safety Commission -- working with Future Industries -- announced a voluntary recall of Essentials for Kids jewelry sets.

The recall came after it was found that the metal jewelry sets contained high levels of lead, which is toxic if ingested by young children.

The recalled jewelry sets include a necklace, bracelet and pair of earrings made of green, blue or pink plastic beads.

The necklaces have painted metallic pendants in the shape of shoes, girls, blackboards with "a-b-c-d" or school buses.

The other recalled jewelry sets include a necklace and seven pendants, one for each day of the week. Those pendants are shaped as sandals, purses or butterflies and, Essentials for Kids is printed on the packaging.

The jewelry was sold at gift stores, dollar stores and small discount stores nationwide between August 2005 and April 2007 for about $1.

CPSC officials said the products -- which were made in China -- should be taken away from children.

Buyers can return it to the store where they purchased it for a full refund or contact Future Industries at 800-929-0006 for information on receiving a full refund.
