Statement from Albertson's:
"At Albertsons, we work very hard to ensure the freshness and quality of all products that we offer our customers.

"We have many programs in place to assist our associates in the proper management of code dating and product rotation; unfortunately, there are instances when items do not get pulled off the shelf in accordance with our policies.

"The manufacturers' "best by" or "sell by" date is the date through which the manufacturer guarantees the peak quality of the product. If a perishable item is handled properly and kept at the correct temperature, it is typically safe to consume for days after the "best by" or "sell by" date.

"For example, according to the American Egg Board's Web site (www.aeb.org): "Fresh shell eggs can be stored in their cartons in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 weeks beyond this date (the Julian date) with insignificant quality loss."

"The Darigold Web site (www.darigold.com) states: "Your sense of smell and taste are great indicators of how fresh the product is. If the product looks, smells and tastes okay, it is probably okay to consume.""
