A Portland driver is in custody after police said he struck a bicyclist participating in the Seattle-to-Portland ride on Highway 30 on Sunday.

Police said 40-year-old Daniel Whittlinger was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee on Highway 30 around 9:30 a.m. when he collided with the back of 24-year-old Gerald Marvin, of Seattle, near Columbia City and drove away.

According to police, two cyclists then collided with either Marvin or his bicycle.

Marvin was transported to Legacy Emanuel Hospital with serious injuries. He is now in fair condition.

The other two cyclists, identified as 47-year-old Michael Beall and 33-year-old Mark Tribble, suffered minor injuries and were treated and released from Legacy Emanuel Hospital.

Police detained Whittlinger eight miles from the crash scene.

Whittlinger was taken into custody and charged with hit-and-run, assault in the second-degree, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, DUII and parole violation. Whittlinger is also known as Daniel Ellis. He has used both names during past contact with police.

The 200-mile Seattle to Portland ride is organized by the Cascade Bicycle Club. According to the group's Web site, the ride is the largest multi-day bicycle event in the Northwest, with up to 9,000 participants riding from Seattle to Portland in one or two days.

Oregon State Police, working in conjunction with the Columbia County District Attorney's Office, is continuing the investigation and seeking witnesses to Wittlinger's actions before and after the collision.
